The Dongola horse is a riding breed native to western Eritrea, Cameroon, and Sudan in Africa. These unusual horses were excellent riders and were also utilized to develop new breeds.

The Dongola horse, imported to Egypt from Numidia in the 13th century, primarily descended from the Iberian breed. It is reported to have a striking resemblance to the Arabian horse, particularly in terms of disposition, in addition to being related to the Barb. Despite the name Dongola, reports claim that it did not originate in this region and is significantly more prevalent in Cameroon, where it suits various demands.

They had been of great value in the past due to their large stature and superb riding abilities. In 1772, the King of Sennar acquired some of these horses, characterizing them as good quality, with strength comparable to carriage horses, but with light and free motions and spirits.

During the Italian-Abyssinian conflict, they also served as cavalry horses with Abyssinian troupes. Furthermore, after introducing the Dongola to Italy, a lighter form of the hunter horse was developed, and Germany conducted similar research. The West African Dongola or perhaps the West African Barb are the collective names for these breeds. Fulana (North Africa); Hausa and Bornu (Nigeria); Bahar-el-Ghazal (Chad); Djerma, Songhai, Mossi, and Yagha (Ivory Coast); and Djerma, Songhai, Mossi, and Yagha (Ivory Coast) (Niger Bend).

The original Dongola is extinct mainly, with one of the main reasons being mixed breeding with Barb, Arab, and crossbreeds. Another factor for the breed’s decline could be a lack of sufficient initiatives to improve the breed’s condition.
