The Morgan Horse and the Arabian Horse were crossed to create the Morab Horse, a relatively new American horse breed. Its name combines its parent breeds’ names (Mor from ‘Morgan’ and ab from ‘Arabian’). Developed initially as a working horses, these animals are now commonly utilised as show horses and even as household pets.

The Morabs were created in the early 1800s in the United States as a mix between Morgan and Arabian horses. Interestingly, even though they were not recognised as a formal breed, the cross between these two horses was already well-known in the 1800s.

During the 1920s, William Randolph Hearst, a breeder and newspaper magnate, established the breed by selecting breeding a Morgan with a Crabbett Arabian to create a robust and durable working horse, particularly for drawing carriages and light farm labour for his ranch in California.

The outcome was a resounding success. A stallion with an excellent trotting pace and a gorgeous, golden coat was born due to the breeding. Dorsey was the first to coin the term Morab.

However, it took over five decades for the first Morab to be registered in 1973. Currently, Morab horses must have verified Morgan and Arabian ancestry, with no more than 75% of each breed.

Temperament

The Morab is an excellent choice for beginner riders since it is intelligent, friendly, and obedient. It has a calm temperament and is easy to teach for high-action tournament riding or enjoyment trail riding.
