Here we can see, “Trakehner”

The Trakehner Horse is a German horse breed that originated in the Prussian state of Prussia. It has a long military history and, due to its adaptation and inborn resilience, may weather crises in the future. In Germany, it is one of the most popular show horses.

Some researchers believe that this breed arose from a now-extinct indigenous race known as ‘Schweiker’ in the 5th and 6th centuries BC, thanks to the efforts of the Scythians rulers. However, in recent decades, their blood was infused with several Mongolian and Turk strains.

In 1732, King Frederick William III of Prussia increased his efforts by selectively breeding animals from the royal stud and relocating the new animals to his Trakehen breeding stud. Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Turk blood was also given to these equines to build a war-ready cavalry.

When the king died in 1787, the horses were moved to a state-run breeding stud to improve the stock by introducing Turkish, Thoroughbred, Mecklenburg, Lithuanian, and Danish genes.

A studbook for these horses was formed in 1878. The breed remained popular until the early twentieth century when World War II devastated the stock, and the best animals were taken by Russian soldiers. Fortunately, those who lived were able to weather the storm and pass on their genes to the following generation of Trakehners.

The West German Association of Trakehner Breeders was founded in 1947 by the government, and they were granted formal recognition in 1950. After a lot of work, the population of this breed has now reached a safe level.
